Watching the Seasons Turn

Edmonton earned the name “Festival City” because we are so crushed by the cold for six to eight months of the year that our collective repressed energy explodes as soon as the temperature climbs over 5 degrees. While most of the festivals don’t get going for another month, why not witness the first buds of spring with people who can tell you the difference between a pussy willow and a poplar?

jjanzen.jpgThe John Janzen Nature Centre next to Fort Edmonton Park is one of the Edmonton’s best-kept secrets. For $5.50, an entire family can spend an afternoon of discovery. On Saturdays at 1:30, watch a salamander eat his lunch. The next day, drop by to watch a snacking garter snake. There is always a twenty-minute session on some neat nature subject at 2.

For my money, however, I go for the Nature Walks. At 2:30, a guide takes a group out into the area around the Centre to point out trees, insects, birds and animals. Questions are welcome, and the walk itself is a relaxing relief to the hectic pace of the workaday world.

I love this city, and watching her start to wake up in the middle of April is breathtaking. Cycle through the river valley and stop by the John Janzen. You can thank me later.
