The Birkie is Back!

Want a heart-healthy way to spend the Valentine's Day weekend?

The Canadian Birkebeiner Ski Festival is a great way to burn some calories, enjoy the beauty of the outdoors and indulge in a little healthy competition!

"It was the year 1206... civil war raged in Norway. An infant prince and heir to the throne, Haakon Haakonsson, was in danger and in hiding near Lillehammer. Two brave Birkebeiner warriors rescued the prince, carrying him on ski from the Gudbrandsdal valley over two mountain ranges to Rena in the Osterdal valley. The young prince was later crowned King of Norway and the civil war ended."

You can celebrate the achievement by skiing anywhere from 2.5 km up to 55 km (with a weighted pack!) through the lovely Blackfoot Recreation Area, just east of Edmonton. There are events from all ages, but you must pre-register in advance.
