sweet treats - Edmonton's own cupcake bakeries

cupcakes.jpg

Cupcakes have returned as a favorite sweet treat for trendy twenty-somethings all the way to grandma and grandpa. But did you know that Edmonton has not one, but two specialty cupcake bakeries?

The Cupcake Bakeshoppe & Cafe is located at 17298 Stony Plain Rd. (780 444-8845) and specializes in nut-free cupcakes - baked daily. Their menu has such yummy flavours as "Scarlet O'Hara" (red velvet cake with cream cheese icing, "Soul-Mate" (chocolate cake topped with infused vanilla buttercream and chocolate ganache) and even "Razz and the City" (vanilla cake with rasberry buttercream).

Whimsical Cake Studio is located at 14910 Riverbend Rd (780 988-2253) although they also sell their cupcakes at the downtown City Market on Saturday mornings during the summer. Get there early - they were all sold out last time I visited the market! Their menu changes seasonally, but they've got some amazing cupcakes on offer right now, like: "Snowball" (sour cream cupcake topped with a tart lemon icing rolled in flakes of coconut), "Mocha Chai" (chocolate mocha cupcake with vanilla Chai tea frosting sprinkled with cinnamon) and the "Kooky Cookies 'n Cream" (chocolate cupcake topped with whipped cream cookies 'n cream sprinkled with Oreo crumbs).

Yummy yummy yummy

There is also a nut-free bakery in St. Albert. It's called Grandin Bakery and it's near the north-end Safeway. Everything there is nut-free, from breads, to cakes, to pastries. Great for school and daycare snacks.
