Finding the Finest Fast Food

Don't get me wrong: I'm just as addicted to Tim Hortons coffee and honey cruellers as the next Canuck. I chow down on chili, savour sandwiches and sample whatever latest offering is so lusciously photographed on the drive-thru menu board. Sometimes I'm just not in the mood, though. Sometimes, instead of a double-double or a burger, I want something different... something - dare I say? - special.

When my thoughts start to stray, and I'm in that perpetual rush, I have a couple of guaranteed go-to's in Edmonton. The first is the High Voltage Cafe on Argyll and Calgary Trail. If you're headed south, you have to pay attention to make the turn, but it's worth it. Panini, donairs (with authentic sweet sauce or tzatziki) and wraps rarely break the $10 mark. All are carefully stuffed and grilled by the attentive staff. A selection of organic juices can round out your selection, but it really is all about the food.

My second option represents two solutions: the Tandoori Grill Express & Montreal Deli. I grant that it's an odd combination, but whether you want paneer or smoked beef on rye, this is the place to stop. The prices are low, the service fast and friendly, and the food just can't be beat.

Next time you're debating "burger vs. sandwich", check out some of the quick, friendly and independent little spots in town.
