Edmonton's Newest Boho District

Old Strathcona was a haven for the artistic and unconventional about 20 years ago. When frat boys and chain stores started moving in, the Bohemian frontrunners scattered, to collect again on the 124th High Street area. With intense downtown development, commercialism has started rearing its ugly head and prices have started going up: where are the Boho trendsetters to congregate now?

La BohemeWelcome to Highlands. Within a few blocks of the venerable La Boheme restaurant and B&B, tiny shops have been opening their doors to the creatively driven. Madsen Studios is not only festooned with blooms, but also locally-produced knicknacks and artworks. In Mandolin Books, you can while away the hours perusing rare literary finds - and drink freshly brewed coffee at the same time! Don't forget to swing by Swish for sassy vintage clothing and decor without Whyte's "trendy tax" markups.

Bacon KitchenHowever, I'm all about the food. While La Boheme will always hold a place in my heart for French cuisine and Moroccan dishes (along with those outstanding theme rooms upstairs), my latest love is Bacon. The unassuming name conceals simply the best new restaurant in Edmonton. With only eight tables plus a window bar and an alleyway patio out back, Bacon couldn’t have served enough people to have earned the buzz it gets around the city. Incredibly friendly service with locally sourced, free range and organic cuisine are part of it, of course, but the proof was in a single taste of my blackberry mascarpone French toast with cranberry maple sausage. The warm, welcoming aroma of bacon rendered the little space even more intimate as it welcomed more hungry patrons through the door.

There is no way you are leaving this new Highlands area disappointed. No friggin' way.
